Here's our text for Sunday, May 13, 2007:
"As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you, but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us."
This week we celebrate Mother's Day. At Hope that means we honor all women of the church. You see, we are blessed to have women with us who are mothers to others through adoption, fostering, and teaching. We have women who mother grown kids that have none of their blood in their veins and babies they've just given birth to. Any woman can be a mother to another. In fact, God calls EVERY woman to motherhood of some type, and every man to fatherhood of some type, biological, or spiritual.
Paul is speaking to the church and Christian community of Thessalonica and he's reminding them of the ways he and his fellow missionaries gently taught them the first time they met of Jesus and His eternal love. He's also reminding them that they were so loved that Paul and his friends did not keep from them the glorious truth of God...that they too may attain eternal life if they simply believe (come to know) Jesus Christ as Lord.
In the text above we are all challenged to disciple others, "like a mother who cares for her little children." Such love, such wondrous love, does Jesus have for us that we must respond to it by sharing it as He has offered it to us.
This week, come expecting to be challenged, not with a simple celebration of motherhood, but with a personal challenge to live out your God-given ministry of parenthood, even if you never have and never will bear a child yourself.
Come join us on Sunday for "The Rest of the Message!"
